Happy spring to all! This is my monthly update on all of my projects. It's a tad more late than I prefer, but considering how busy I have been it is a big relief. I am plotzing with excitement over some of my recent developments and I encourage you to check them out as they evolve. I have added just a couple things to my Qena Sint'isis gallery so please jump over there for the newest finished things.
New Installation
I can now announce that earlier this year I received an invitation to create what will be my very first permanent installation. The artwork I will be constructing is for a small convention center that will be opened by my tribe's government, the Ninilchik Traditional Council, at the end of May. Now that the plans have been finalized I will be spending most of my time until the opening date working on this piece. The opportunity is a very big honor for me and I don't think I've ever been so jazzed to work on something before, which for me is huge because I am known for being lively 24/7! In light of this project I wont be working on regular pieces as often but I will continue to do them when I have time at home.
Plate Project in Homer
Also in May will be the display of the Bunnell Street Arts Center's annual Plate Project. This is the first year I've created artwork for the project, which is a membership drive for the gallery's collective. Every year a local ceramics artist creates and donates several ceramic "blanks" that artists of the center can select from to paint and create an individual piece for the show. I've seen the plates go up every year since I was very young and this is the first time I've braved tackling a ceramic to make something beautiful with! I'm quite happy with the results. My plate is titled "Theophrastus on the Achates" and its theme is a cultural fusion tribute to Theophrastus, the classical Greek philosopher and early geologist and botanist. Among his works he coined the name "agate" for the Sicilian river whose Greek name is "Achates", where several exemplary sources of the stone were found. Agate is also a stone highly regarded in southern Dena'ina myth and symbolism as being an omen of fortune and spiritual guidance, especially pieces found on shorelines or in riverine systems. Along with this piece you can see all of the plates on display at the center in Homer, Alaska in May.
Print Gear Shop Expansion
And finally, this month I've added a BIG expansion to my Society6 shop at society6.com/argentkvasnikoff. Now you can support me with an even bigger selection of available items including laptop skins, tablet cases, pillows, and nifty zip wallets and pouches! Every purchase from my shop helps put $$$ in my pocket to help me continue to make even cooler, bigger, more beautiful things for projects into the future. If you would like to see a particular artwork available in the shop just drop me an e-mail.
As always, if you'd like to track my work in progress I am always posting things to my Instagram account @argentkvasnikoff. Please follow me there to see everything I'm working on in real time and to take a peek into the wacky world of other parts of my life.
Thank you very much for your support.
